The group has wide ranging experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the medical device, aeronautical, automotive and packaging sectors. Much of our success has been before the UK and European Patent Offices.

We have a mix of experienced attorneys with many years in the profession as well as younger members who have recent “in-house” experience in IP management or research.

Our work includes a number of technologies which have attracted the attention of mainstream media in recent times. No stranger to high value portfolios, our team have built exploitable patent portfolios for clients whether for defensive, offensive or cross-licensing business models.

Introduction

David has an MEng (Hons) in Materials Engineering and is assigned to our Engineering group. He is currently training full-time to qualify as a Chartered UK & European Patent Attorney.

Qualifications

David graduated with an MEng (Hons) in Materials Engineering from the University of Birmingham. He is also awaiting completion of an Engineering Doctorate in High Performance Aerospace Applications and is working towards chartership with the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3).

Technical

Prior to joining Avidity IP, David worked at a major UK based aero engine manufacturer where he was involved in the research and development of repair methods for high value critical rotating components. David also has professional experience of precision casting and automotive engine manufacture, implementing statistical methods of quality improvement on behalf of an executive German automotive brand.

Legal

David is currently training to qualify as a Chartered UK & European Patent Attorney.

Commercial

Due to his background in research and development, David has personally invented and overseen the submission of multiple patent applications, developing an extensive knowledge of the inventor’s role in the patent application process. During his previous role, David was concerned with intellectual property mapping and competitor analysis for rivalling manufacture and repair strategies of high value critical rotating components.  David also has experience of working in collaborative teams within the defence aerospace industry, utilising his personal experience of professional relations when providing advice to clients.

MChem Chemistry, University of Manchester; Post Graduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law, University of Manchester. Chartered UK Patent Attorney, European Design Attorney.

Technical

Although Simon’s primary expertise lies in the chemical fields, his practice extends to such fields as automotive and aerospace engineering, manufacturing plant design and welding apparatus.

Legal

Besides extensive experience of drafting and prosecution of patent applications for the UK and European jurisdictions, Simon is well versed in drafting US-specific Claims and tackling rejections from the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Simon has also been involved in a number of successful European oppositions and has prepared licence and collaboration agreements for small and medium sized companies.

Commercial

Previously, Simon worked in the IP Department at Waters Corporation, a leading manufacturer of laboratory instruments. Simon was involved in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications in the fields of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, with many of those applications relating to technologies key to Waters’ award winning instruments. These experiences in particular lend Simon a keen understanding of the IP requirements of large organisations.

Gemma McGeough

Introduction

Gemma is assigned to our Engineering Professional Service Group. She has experience of radar, sensor and military systems, in particular for aerospace applications

Having worked previously in a corporate environment Gemma has experience of the commercial application of IP.

Qualifications

Gemma graduated with an MSci (Hons) degree in Mathematics and Chemistry. She also holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Management and is working towards Chartership with the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.

Technical

Prior to joining Avidity IP, Gemma worked for a leading R&D company where she was involved in research and analysis of radar, sensor and military systems, in particular for aerospace applications.

Legal

Gemma is currently training to qualify as a Chartered UK & European Patent Attorney.

Commercial

During her time in industry Gemma spent time in the in-house intellectual property department, gaining valuable experience of the commercial application of IP, together with the internal processes required to take an invention from concept to patent.

She also has experience of working in collaborative teams with other members of the defence industry on a range of MOD projects, and uses her experience of working in a corporate environment to good effect when providing advice and guidance to clients.

Qualifications

Chartered UK Patent Attorney; European Patent Attorney; European Trade Mark Attorney; European Design Attorney; Degree in Applied Physics and Materials Science from Manchester Metropolitan University.

Technical

John has experience of drafting and prosecuting patents in a range of technical fields including automotive components, waste disposal vehicles and medical devices.

John has advised trade mark clients, both large and small, active in a wide range of markets including confectionery, pharmaceuticals, gaming products, man-made fibers, and CAD/CAM software.

Legal

John has advised on freedom to operate issues relating to patents, trade marks and designs, prepared and prosecuted patent applications in the UK and at the EPO and prepared and prosecuted trade mark and design applications in the UK and at OHIM.

Commercial

John has spent a number of years as an attorney within a corporate legal services environment, working alongside other legal specialists to provide integrated intellectual property services to the business, including instructing inventors on aspects of the patent application process, negotiating with third parties to ensure freedom to operate and providing the board with strategic intellectual property advice.

Christopher Moore

Chris represents a wide range of clients across the breadth of engineering arts. Much of his time is spent in advising multinational companies on internal IP strategy and policy.

His ethos is one of providing client-focused advice, delivered to the highest service standards.

Chartered UK Patent Attorney; European Patent Attorney; European Design Attorney; Degree in Chemistry, University of East Anglia; MSc in Spectroscopy, University of East Anglia; PhD Physical Chemistry, University of Birmingham.

Technical

Chris has many clients in the automotive components, building materials, electrical components and domestic appliances fields, to each of which he provides strategic portfolio advice aimed at maximizing the potential from their IP.

He has specific expertise in ‘green’ technologies and their application to waste and energy reduction.

In other arts, Chris is the client manager for several acknowledged UK leaders in their respective fields, including organic chemistry, pharmaceuticals, polymers, ceramics, chemical engineering and materials.

Legal

Chris’ principal practice is in obtaining patent rights for clients in Europe and further afield.

However, Chris has a significant contentious practice involving patent litigation in the UK and abroad; European opposition cases at first and second instance; design and unregistered design right litigation in the UK; alternative dispute resolution negotiations.

Commercial

Chris is currently engaged in advising multinational companies on internal IP strategy and policy.

Chris has recently led successful negotiations on inward and outward licensing deals for separate clients, both with European based multinational corporations.

Chris is an authorized IP representative for the Waste Resource Action Program (WRAP), providing IP audits for WRAP on SMEs requiring IP funding in the recycling/waste reduction fields.

Chris regularly provides freedom to operate opinions against complex legal landscapes. Finding sensible, commercial solutions against such backgrounds is his goal.

Alex is Manager of the Engineering Professional Service Group. He joined Avidity IP from Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) Ltd, where he was an in-house attorney responsible for the prosecution and management of the company’s patents in the field of physics and also their trade mark and design portfolio.

Qualifications

Chartered UK Patent Attorney; European Patent Attorney; European Trade Mark Attorney; European Design Attorney; Degree in Astrophysics (1st Class), University of Hertfordshire including ERASMUS scholarship at Dublin City University (1 year special programme to study Applied Physics); PhD Astrophysics, University of Hertfordshire; Masters in the Management of Intellectual Property (Distinction), Centre for Commercial Law Studies, University of London.

Technical

Alex has experience of a wide range of engineering fields including inkjet printing cartridges and ink formulations, dispensing materials for solid imaging apparatus, display apparatus, semiconductor devices and mechanical engineering.

Legal

Alex handles a considerable amount of original patent drafting, for clients as diverse as UK SMEs and foreign-based multinationals. He deals with a growing mechanical engineering portfolio, particularly in the fields of magnetic actuators, transmission systems and high-torque direct-drives, automotive engineering and medical devices.

He has extensive experience in the areas of license and joint development agreement (JDA) drafting and negotiation and third party patent landscape analysis and advice.

Commercial

The time Alex spent at Cambridge Display Technology dealing with their IP portfolio means that he has a clear understanding of the importance of good IP management. He is able to see the picture from both sides which means that he is able to provide the best advice and guidance for his clients.
